Windows on the iPhone

Monday, December 29th, 2008

iPhone WindowsCitrix has announced on their blog that they are actively developing a Citrix Receiver for the iPhone that will allow iPhone users to run of millions of Windows apps via the iPhone. This open up some possibilities, such as the ability to vie web sites that require Flash or are locked to IE. Perhaps even Cut & Paste (within Citrix sessions ).

Cheap HDMI Cables

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

If you are placing some cool tech under the Christmas tree this year, that requires an HDMI cable, don’t let the salesperson soak you for $50 to $200. In a recent post to CNET’s Crave blog, they say “… the truth is that expensive HDMI cables aren’t worth it and the cheap cables available online are just as good.”

I have been purchasing HDMI cables from Amazon.com for under $12 (with free shipping) for some time now. Sometimes as low as 79¢. I have never had a problem with the inexpensive cables. So the bottom line is just search Amazon.com for HDMI cables and buy the cheapest one you can find from an Amazon Prime vendor. Here is a link to the ones I just purchased for $11.79.

PC-to-Mac switch made easy

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

According to Belkin, “making the move from a PC to a Mac computer has never been easier. The Belkin PC-To-Mac Transfer Kit allows you to seamlessly transfer all your important data, including user accounts, email and Internet browser settings as well as photos, movies, music and desktop items.” While most users making the switch can just bring their old Windows PC to the Apple Store and it will be done for free, IT Departments, hobbyists and consultants will find this a welcome addition to their kit. Available from Amazon.com.

Convert Any Video File

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

Now that VisualHub has ceased development, we needed a solution to convert all of our video files to various different formats. For example, converting the files to work with your TiVo, AppleTV or iPhone. Up until now, HandBrake has always just ripped your DVDs into MPEG video files for playing back on an iPod or archiving on your network. But now in version 0.9.3 release it will take any video file as an input source, no longer just DVDs.

Keep in ind that it no longer decoded DVDs, but that isn’t really an issue if you have VLC installed on your Mac. Handbreak will just use VLC’s DVD decoder.

More Powerful Spotlight searches

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

Today someone asked me if there is a way to do a search in Spotlight and have it only fine Item A and Item B when they both appear together. It reminded me of one of the features Apple put into Spotlight that most people don’t know about, called boolean searches.

In the Spotlight menu or any application that has a Spotlight box such as Apple Mail, you can type Item A NOT Item B and the results will only include items where Item A is found without Item B. This also works with OR and AND. Note that the capitalization of AND, OR and NOT is required for this to work. to instantly show all matches, except those containing ‘sunset.’

For example “Microsoft NOT Windows” will return all occurrences where Microsoft is mentioned without Windows.

Another example: “Dolby AND AppleTV” will find anything that has AppleTV and Dolby, but not items that only have one or the other.
